Provenance

These bookmarks are inspired by bandhani (derived from the Sanskrit root, bandh, which means “to bind” or “to tie”), a tie dye technique dating back to the Indus Valley civilization in 4000 B.C. which involves plucking cloth with the fingernails into many tiny bindings that form a figurative design. The most prolific bandhani design is an arrangement of polka-dot style dots into mini clusters, first seen in a 6th century wall painting depicting the life of the Buddha at the Ajanta Ellora caves in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
